The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District is one of 43 districts worldwide. We are responsible for 311 miles of the Ohio River, along with its tributary rivers and drainage basins. The District employs more than 1,200 people and encompasses 45,000 square miles in five states, including West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina. Economic benefits associated with the District are significant, broad-based, and affect every resident of the region. We have designed and constructed more flood control dams, levees, and floodwalls than any other Corps district. Year-round river transportation is possible due to the series of locks and dams built and operated by the Corps, which results in more than 64 million tons of commodities shipped through the District annually, valued at more than $17.3 billion.
The work done by the Corps also results in contractor employment, coupled with significant purchases of products, services and materials throughout the region. The regional economy is also stimulated by approximately 9.6 million visitors who travel annually to Corps of Engineers recreation sites throughout the District. Operations in the District include dredging, lock and dam operation and maintenance, recreation management and flood damage reduction.
